Sanitary Precautions You Need To Take During A Move

Needless to say, COVID-19 has changed the meaning of normal for people across the world. In these chaotic times, the WHO has advised people to practice social distancing and maintain proper hygiene. 

If you have scheduled your move during these days, you’ll have to take extreme sanitary precautions to make sure that all your possessions are disinfected before and after you have moved them. 

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the coronavirus that caused the COVID-19 can live on plastics for up to 72 hours and stainless steel for up to 48 hours. It can live for up to 24 hours on cardboard, and 4 hours on copper. 

Here are a few safety measures to take:

Contact your movers to find out the precautionary measures they’re taking.

It’s a good idea to call your movers to ask them about the sanitary steps they’re taking before the moving day. 

Ensure they’re asking their workers to wash hands frequently and giving them sanitizers and masks when they’re on the go. If you hadn’t received your price quote from them in person, request to get it virtually. 

When the movers come to your location to pick up the moving items, don’t shake hands. It’s best to maintain a 6 ft. distance between yourselves.  

Don’t use recycled boxes

You never know where recycled boxes have been. 

As the virus can live on cardboard for 24 hours, you should use new boxes and disinfect them with alcohol wipes. 

While packing, make sure that you’re wearing a mask and don’t touch your face.

Ensure a no-contact handover

Once you’ve packed the boxes, leave them in a place where the movers can pick them (for example, the front of your porch or outside your main door if you live in an apartment). 

This way, you’ll ensure that there is no contact between you and the movers. If possible, give your movers access to a sink and soap so that they can wash their hands while loading the boxes.

Disinfect the boxes once they reach your new location

When you receive the boxes at your new place, make sure you disinfect them. 

If the boxes are too many, take your time in opening them, and while they are sealed, leave them in a part of the house that you don’t frequent. 

While opening the boxes, wear masks and gloves. Remember not to touch your face!
